The Genesis brand’s first performance variant isn’t subtle, particularly when painted in its signature Magma Orange hue. And the ends of its rear wing are turned up, which, to us, gives a devil’s-horns vibe. That’s appropriate, because when driving the Magma, there might as well be a persistent devilish presence on your shoulder whispering, “Push harder.”
📌 The Core Development
The smirks on our faces when driving the Magma are mostly about its immensely swift acceleration, satisfying ride and handling, or the silly-but-impressive 9000-rpm fake engine noises. But the name of this new subbrand also makes us think of “liquid hot magma” (in a Dr. Evil voice, of course).
The GV60 Magma is based on the excellent Hyundai Ioniq 5 N , which introduced the fake shifting and faux engine noises to this electric platform. Peak output is the same 641 horsepower as the Ioniq 5 N, but the Magma gets the full luxury treatment. In fact, the number of Magma-specific touches is staggering for such a low-volume model, including front bucket seats and black suede upholstery with orange stitching—even the key fob dons a Magma Orange shell. Although the front seats are comfortable and supportive, we were surprised to find no lumbar adjustability.

There are also plenty of Magma-specific displays in the gauge-cluster screen that have a chronograph feel to them. They include information such as the temperatures of the two motors and battery pack, as well as the 9000-rpm tachometer integrated into the speedometer display. Then there are all the configuration settings for the chassis and powertrain modes in the center screen. It’s all thoughtfully and tastefully executed. Plus, there are elements from the regular GV60 that still wow first-timers, such as the circular shifter that flips over and looks like a crystal ball when the car is parked.
📊 Industry & Real-World Impact
While the Ioniq 5 N mimics a 7750-rpm four-cylinder with its engine cosplay, the Magma aims higher, instead playing the tune of a 9000-rpm V-6. Is it gimmicky? Absolutely. But it’s also impressively executed. And loud: With the adjustable noise level turned up all the way, the Magma’s interior volume measures 102 decibels—about the same as a Corvette ZR1X—as it rips its way repeatedly to its pseudo-9000 rpm over and over on the way to a 166-mph top speed.

🔮 Strategic Outlook & What Lies Ahead
Despite weighing roughly 90 pounds more, the Magma’s performance is all but identical to the Ioniq 5 N’s, with 60 mph arriving in a scant 3.0 seconds flat and a quarter-mile blitz of 11.1 seconds at 126 mph. The two run neck and neck, at least until the Magma’s longer Boost mode (15 seconds versus 10 in the Ioniq 5 N) causes it to pull ahead above 120 mph. Although there’s a Boost button on the steering wheel, helpfully, the Magma’s extra hit automatically engages when you push the accelerator all the way to the floor.
